About the museum
In 573 Istria came under direct Byzantine rule. In the mid-6th century Bishop Eufrazije had the present building erected on the site of an older three-aisled basilica, dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. The Eufrazijeva bazilika (Euphrasian Basilica) is ranked among the best-preserved early Christian basilicas, and UNESCO inscribed it on the World Heritage List in 1997.
The complex includes an atrium with a narthex, an octagonal baptistery, the bishop’s palace (episcopium) and the cella trichora. Above the main altar stands a ciborium from 1277, decorated with a mosaic.
