About the museum
The Hrvatski muzej turizma (Croatian Museum of Tourism) is located in the heart of Park Angiolina in Opatija, in a historic villa more than 180 years old, the Vila Angiolina. It is dedicated to tourism as a phenomenon: its past and present, its influence on everyday life, and the way in which tourism has shaped Croatian towns, communities and culture.
The villa, in Palladian style, was built in the mid-19th century by the Rijeka merchant family Scarpa on the site of the former maritime house of Matija Justi Katičić. The villa quickly became a favourite gathering place for guests from Rijeka and the surrounding area. Over its history it changed owners: in 1875 it was bought by Count Viktor Chorinsky, and after him by the Društvo južnih željeznica (Southern Railway Company), which invested in the development of Opatija.
The villa has three floors of about 1,000 square metres. The representative ground floor, decorated with stucco, neo-Corinthian columns and painted natural motifs, is itself a permanent exhibit; the first floor houses the museum and exhibition displays, and the attic houses the museum’s workrooms. The permanent display “Vila Angiolina – priča o Opatiji” (Villa Angiolina – The Story of Opatija) follows the history of the villa and the town, and the museum also organises exhibitions, workshops and travelling displays.
