About the museum
The Muzejska zbirka Kastavštine arose from the wish of the people of Kastav to have a museum of their own. It was originally planned as a memorial collection for the writer Vladimir Nazor, director of the Kastav teacher training school from 1908 to 1918, but the material collected went beyond that framework. In 1961 a committee was therefore formed, and later a general museum covering the whole of Kastavština rather than just the town. The first permanent display was produced by experts from the Pomorski i povijesni muzej Hrvatskog primorja in Rijeka, and it opened on the Town Day of Kastav, 6 June 1981.
The collection is housed above the medieval Kastav Volta, in the former premises of the municipality. It holds about 2,000 objects of cultural-historical material: manuscripts, photographs and postcards, school work, textiles, emblems of cultural and educational societies, material on the national revival in Istria and the workers' movement, and weapons from the People's Liberation War.
The current permanent display gives a brief overview of life in Kastavština. It begins with archaeological finds from the prehistoric Mišinac cemetery, follows the medieval period with the Kastavski zakonik (Kastav Statute) of 1400 and the use of Glagolitic script, and then the educational and cultural activity of the town, including the Pučka škola (People's School), the Čitaonica (Reading Room) and the Učiteljska škola (Teacher Training School). Daily life and the economy in the 19th and 20th centuries are presented in thematic exhibitions.
