About the museum
The Interpretacijski centar Grobnik is part of the route “Putevima Frankopana” and is devoted to the Ottoman incursions and the political upheavals in the time of the Frankopans. Grobnik Castle (Kaštel Grobnik) was built on a hill 466 metres high between the left bank of the Rječina and the Grobnik Field (Grobničko polje). Since 1225 it has been owned by the Krk counts – the Frankopans – and it was the westernmost line of defence of their medieval Vinodol.
The south-western tower with the former chapel of St Helena on the ground floor is the oldest part of the fortification, while the core of the castle, with a triangular ground plan and towers at the corners, took shape between the 15th and 17th centuries. During the Ottoman raids, after the Battle of Krbava Field in 1493, Bernardin Frankopan often stayed in Grobnik. It is believed that a scriptorium operated there in the 16th century, from which, at the initiative of Bernardin Frankopan, the first Croatian Bible emerged; it has not survived. The Drugi novljanski brevijar (Second Novi Breviary), a Glagolitic codex largely copied by the priest Martinac, has survived.
