About the museum
Trsat Castle is a strategically projecting lookout point on a hill 138 metres high that dominates Rijeka. It is first mentioned in 1288 as the seat of a parish. A Liburnian watchtower stood on the site from prehistoric times, monitoring the route from the interior to the sea; the Romans integrated it into the defensive system of the Liburnian limes, whose starting point was Tarsatica, a fort on the site of today’s old town of Rijeka.
The castle is one of the oldest fortifications on the Croatian littoral, and early medieval features have been preserved in it. From the plateau there is a view of the remains of the limes on the neighbouring hills of Katarina and Kalvarija, and of the whole old town of Rijeka.
Today the castle offers a permanent exhibition in the interpretation centre, an information point with tourist information about the city, and a gallery space with art exhibitions. In summer, concerts and theatre performances are held outdoors, and a café operates in the castle.
