About the museum

The Muzej hvarske baštine grew out of the Historical Archive, which the Municipality of Hvar established in 1950 at the initiative of Dr Niko Duboković. Duboković regarded the island as an open-air museum and directed the institution towards the protection of monuments, a library, the building up of museum collections and the documentation of cultural property. In 1965 the archive became the Centre for the Protection of the Cultural Heritage of the Island of Hvar, and in 1998 the centre became the Muzej hvarske baštine. It is registered as a general local heritage museum with a local remit and today has sixteen museum collections.

The seat of the museum is the Ljetnikovac Hanibala Lucića (summer house of Hanibal Lucić), a stone villa among fields and vineyards east of the cathedral, built around 1530. It consists of a garden enclosed by a high wall and two smaller single-storey buildings: the western building houses the historical archive, the library and the administration, and the eastern house has two museum displays. On the upper floor is the Salon Hanibala Lucića, furnished with antique furniture, books and works of art, including a portrait of the poet. The garden is divided by a walkway into four sections, with a well in the centre. Hanibal Lucić (c. 1485–1553) was a Croatian Renaissance poet, playwright and translator.

The collections include land and underwater archaeological material, a numismatic collection, stone fragments, the natural history cabinet of Dr Grgur Bučić, postcards, old photographs, rare books, documents of the Hvar commune, modern and contemporary art, and the collection of the Hvarsko povijesno kazalište (Hvar Historical Theatre), which was built in 1612 on the upper floor of the Arsenal.
