About the museum
The Dominikanski samostan sv. Petra Mučenika in Stari Grad was founded in 1481 by Fra German of Piacenza. After Ottoman raids on Hvar, the monastery was fortified with two round towers. The church was renovated in 1896 and contains the tomb of the poet Petar Hektorović and his mother Katarina; Hektorović’s Croatian verses are carved above the church entrance.
The monastery houses a museum with an archaeological and an art collection. The archaeological collection includes fossil finds from the area around Stari Grad, stone monuments with votive, funerary, boundary and official inscriptions, coins from Fara and other Greek cities, and Roman finds, including funerary stelae. The Greek inscriptions from Fara dating from the 4th–2nd centuries BC are particularly valuable.
The art collection highlights the Lamentation of Christ attributed to Jacopo Robusti Tintoretto and the wooden crucifix by Giacomo Piazzetta, considered the most beautiful Baroque crucifix in Dalmatia. The monastery also has a large library with manuscripts and incunabula, some of which are on display in the museum.
