About the museum
The Vltavan association in Purkarec was founded on 1 April 1902, and its first members were about forty local raftsmen and forest workers. The association supported sick and injured members and partly covered the funeral costs of deceased members. In 1953 the authorities dissolved it, and it was re-established as an independent association only in 1991. In 2012, at the association’s request, Purkarec received the title “Mezinárodní voroplavecká vesnice” (International Rafting Village).
The Timber Rafting Hall was opened in 1977, for the association’s 75th anniversary, in house no. 33. The members built it with their own efforts, and the basic exhibits were made by the association’s oldest member, who also documented the technique of binding rafts. The exhibition remained in this house until 1993, and in 1995 it reopened in house no. 86, expanded with panels about the Vltavan associations in Prague, Davle and Štěchovice.
The hall is meant to remind today’s generation of the arduous work of the raftsmen and of the time when rafts were an inseparable part of life along the Vltava. The last raft on the Vltava sailed on 12 September 1960.
