About the museum
The Rudolfinum, with its unusual combination of a concert hall and galleries under one roof, was built by the architects Josef Zítek and Josef Schulz in the neo-Renaissance style and solemnly opened in 1885. At that time it housed the annual exhibitions of the Krasoumná jednota and the old-art collection of the Společnost vlasteneckých přátel umění (Society of Patriotic Friends of Art), which today forms the core of the National Gallery’s collections. From the beginning of the 20th century until the First World War, short-term exhibitions here presented great names of modern art, for example Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and Paul Klee.
After Czechoslovakia was founded in 1919, the Rudolfinum became the seat of the Chamber of Deputies, and after the Second World War its exhibition spaces served other purposes, including a conservatory. Only in 1989–1992 was the building extensively reconstructed under the architect Karel Prager, and the exhibition spaces were restored at the same time.
Galerie Rudolfinum began operating on 1 January 1994 as a state institution within the Czech Philharmonic. As an exhibition institution without a collection (kunsthalle), it focuses on contemporary foreign and Czech art. It is complemented by publishing activities and by the independent educational centre Artpark, with its library, lectures and programmes for schools and the public.
