About the museum

The Bishop’s Court is a group of historic buildings below the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Brno, on Muzejní Street. The site is documented from 1352, when a Gothic provostry of the Brno chapter stood here. In 1588 the building was bought by Stanislav Pavlovský, Bishop of Olomouc, who had it rebuilt by the Italian builder Antonio Gabri; the work after 1600 was completed by Cardinal František z Ditrichštejna.

The Gothic phase is preserved in the prismatic tower with a chapel, the Renaissance in the arcades and the arcaded loggia. The Moravian Museum acquired the complex in 1818, and in the 1880s the d’Elvert wings were added. Extensive alterations for the museum’s needs were completed in 1963, and in 2009 the courtyard was restored, where large events and theatre performances take place.

Today the zoological, geological-palaeontological and mineralogical-petrographic departments of the museum are located here. Visitors can see permanent exhibitions on the fauna of Moravia and an aquarium of freshwater fish; the complex also has the Historická síň (Historic Hall) and smaller halls for temporary exhibitions. The complex also includes the Mendelianum, which has its own entry in the database.
