About the museum
The Denis shelter lies in the rock massif beneath the Petrov hill in the centre of Brno. It was built as an anti-aircraft and later anti-nuclear civil defence shelter, and in its concept it belongs to the works that responded in the 20th century to the threat of air attacks and weapons of mass destruction.
The structure consists of a system of mutually perpendicular vaulted passages carved into the rock and lined with brick. It covers a rectangle of roughly 85 × 60 metres, has several entrances and a number of emergency exits; the passages usually have a cross-section of about 3 × 3 metres and, together with the escape tunnels, total about 900 metres. The shelter was designed to be self-sufficient in water, electricity and breathable air, and after an atomic explosion up to 3,000 people could survive in it for as long as four days.
Fortunately the shelter never had to fulfil its purpose. Today it is run by the contributory organisation TIC BRNO, and visitors can see the long passages and the preserved equipment in its original state on a guided tour. For more adventurous visitors, tours in the dark are also offered, in which most of the route is lit only by the visitors' head torches.
