About the museum
The Diocesan Museum of the Brno Bishopric was founded on 1 June 1993 as the first museum of its kind in the Czech Republic. It was first housed in the premises of the Augustinian monastery in Staré Brno (Old Brno), where it remained until 1999. Its activity was then interrupted until 2006.
In 2006 the museum obtained newly renovated premises in the canons' house on Petrov 1, next to the Cathedral of St Peter and St Paul. There it opened as an information and contact centre with an exhibition of sacred art from the Brno diocese, and in 2007 a permanent exhibition, Vita Christi – Život Kristův (The Life of Christ), was added, whose author was the then director Karel Rechlík. The museum also holds large exhibitions in the cathedral crypt and, since 2014, in the so-called Propité věž (Propité Tower).
The permanent exhibition presents more than forty paintings, sculptures and liturgical objects from the 13th to 19th centuries and tells the story of the life of Jesus Christ. The museum is an organizational unit of the Brno Bishopric and offers guided tours and programmes for schools, and it takes part in the Muzejní noc (Museum Night) every year.
