About the museum
The Brandýs executioner’s house is one of the few preserved executioners’ dwellings that is partly open to the public. It is recognisable by its Renaissance psaníčkové sgraffiti on the façade, and it stands not far from the centre of Brandýs nad Labem. The museum acquired the dilapidated executioner’s house in the mid-1960s and restored it in 1971 to 1973; it housed an exhibition on the natural conditions of the Praha-východ district and an exhibition on the law of torture (útrpné právo).
The present exhibition was created after a further reconstruction around the turn of the millennium. It presents the history of capital jurisdiction and the executioner’s trade, and shows the darker side of the past, when torture was commonly used during interrogation, death sentences were carried out and crowds watched the executions.
The concept of the exhibition is also suitable for children, who can try out some objects in a small torture chamber. The executioner’s house is a branch of the Oblastní muzeum Praha-východ (Praha-východ Regional Museum).
