About the museum
The Polabské národopisné muzeum (Polabí Ethnographic Museum) is one of the oldest regional open-air museums in Europe. Its beginnings go back to 1895, when a regional ethnographic museum was set up in a converted former smithy and rychta (village farmhouse) called “staročeská chalupa” (Old Czech cottage).
The modern history of the skanzen as a rescue museum of the folk architecture of central Polabí began in 1967. The skanzen stands next to a Renaissance castle, on the site of a former manorial estate in the middle of the village, and it gradually expanded with buildings relocated mainly from the Nymburk region.
Today almost forty objects stand on two hectares: nine cottages, seven granaries, four barns, a small chapel and other small folk structures. Furnished interiors with mannequins show life in a Polabí village from the mid-18th to the mid-20th century. Exhibitions with an ethnographic theme are held in the former manorial cooperage, and Easter and Christmas exhibitions are traditional.
