About the museum
The Maritime Museum of the Czech Republic is devoted to the rich history of Czechoslovak sea shipping. At its height, this was the second largest fleet of a landlocked state in the world; in total it had 44 cargo ships, some of them of impressive size. The museum commemorates these ships and the fates of the sailors, who often devoted their whole lives to them, and adds further Czech traces on the world's seas, such as the story of Augustin Heřman and the ship La Grace, or the adventures of Eduard Ingriš on balsa rafts.
The museum is run by the association Česká lodní společnost. From 2023 it was housed in Veletov, in the former Konzum building. Because of the planned reconstruction of the municipal building, it ended its season in Veletov at the end of July 2026 and has been moving to Čelákovice since August.
The museum's new home is the historic building of a former school in Čelákovice–Sedlčánky at Mírové náměstí 45, where a new and expanded exhibition is being prepared. According to the operator, visitors will be able to see it open in the 2027 season. An information centre is already operating there. The museum is also involved in saving the last Czechoslovak sea cargo ship, the Třinec.
