About the museum
The Archeologický skanzen Březno was established as a site of experimental archaeology at an important multi-period locality near Postoloprty in the Louny district. Long-term research here documented settlement from the Neolithic to the early Middle Ages. Archaeologists worked here from 1954 to 1973, and from 1981 an experimental archaeology workplace operated here. Its task was to test how period tools worked, how demanding it was to build houses, how much material the constructions consumed, and how one could live in them in summer and winter.
Since 1992 the open-air museum has been part of the Oblastní muzeum v Lounech (Regional Museum in Louny). The permanent open-air exhibition presents reconstructions of dwellings and farm buildings from the 4th millennium BC, from the 6th and 9th centuries AD, and a Slavic settlement from the 9th century. The buildings stand on the sites of excavated ground plans and are made of original materials.
Visitors can see reconstructed houses, demonstrations of prehistoric technologies and animals, and can take part in guided tours, workshops and craft courses. The open-air museum holds all-day prehistoric and historical events several times a year, for example gatherings of gladiators, Romans and barbarians, or International Archaeology Day.
