About the museum
František Kupka was born in 1871 in Opočno, but he spent his childhood and youth in Dobruška. The family moved here in 1872. In 1882 his father, Václav Kupka, bought house no. 323 in Svatodušská Street, today František Kupka Street, and the family lived there until 1892. In Dobruška Kupka trained as a saddler and harness maker; he then studied painting in Jaroměř, Prague, Vienna and, from 1895, in Paris. He became one of the pioneers of abstract art.
The house has an original core with thick stone walls and a partly dug-out cellar with a well. The first written mention of the building dates from 1685, and most of the town’s original development was destroyed by a fire in 1806. During the reconstruction in 2021, remains of the original internal layout of the house came to light.
The František Kupka House exhibition is part of the Vlastivědné muzeum v Dobrušce (Local History Museum in Dobruška) and opened to the public on 11 September 2021. It was created in cooperation with the Prague Galerie KODL and, in several rooms of the house, introduces visitors to Kupka’s life and work. It includes an entertaining and educational section where visitors can try out the theme by writing and drawing. Early Kupka works from the museum’s collections are displayed separately, in the exhibition Mládí Františka Kupky in the historic town hall building.
