About the museum

The Městské muzeum in Nové Město nad Metují is one of the relatively young museum institutions. For a long time the town had no museum, and only in the mid-1990s was the historic building on Na Zadomí Street adapted for museum purposes. The main building is part of a 16th-century house that is attached to an artillery bastion of the town fortifications. In the past it served, among other things, as a burgher house and the town archive, and it was reconstructed for the museum in 1994 to 1995.

Today the museum is a contributory organisation of the town and manages several buildings in the historic core: alongside the main building also the Městská galerie Zázvorka (Zázvorka Town Gallery) and facilities in the Spolkový dům (Association House). The exhibitions focus on the history of the town and region, on crafts and on the nature of the Nové Město region.

Among the most visited exhibitions is the Baroque pharmacy from the monastery of the Brothers of Mercy, which operated from 1750 until roughly the 1950s and has been part of the museum since 2006. Another exhibition presents Prim watches made in Nové Město nad Metují and is, according to the museum, the only permanent exhibition of Prim watches and clocks in the Czech Republic. The burgher nativity scene, carved since 2001 by the woodcarver Jarmila Haldová, shows life on the Nové Město square and keeps growing, because people can have their own figure carved. The smaller Sál přírody (Hall of Nature) shows the living and non-living nature of the Nové Město region and commemorates the geologist and polar explorer Josef Sekyra, a native of the town.
