About the museum

Medieval cellars lie beneath most of the houses on Zachariáš z Hradce Square and beneath part of the castle grounds. The individual cellars, some of them two storeys high, were linked by a maze of passages, which served mainly as storerooms and sometimes as a last refuge for the inhabitants from enemies. According to one legend, one of the passages led as far as the distant Roštejn Castle.

The underground was first opened to the public on 6 September 2014, Heritage Day, as an interactive, entertaining and educational exhibition on the history of the town. The project was financed from the Regional Operational Programme Southeast. Since 1 July 2021 a longer section, now 250 metres long, has been accessible, as well as the cellars beneath house No. 66 (Dům dětí a mládeže), where a devil-themed exhibition with hell and a hidden treasure has been set up.

The exhibition is designed as multimedia and entertaining. Visitors see the underground in its original state as well as reconstructed spaces, where modern projection technology presents the town of Telč and important moments in its development.
