About the museum

The Telč museum opened in 1886. The basis of its collections was created by Professor Jaroslav Janoušek, who gathered documents, books, craft objects and paintings. Other gifts further enlarged the collections, for example from Professor Jaroslav Maška and other citizens of Telč. The museum was housed in the former Jesuit college and was run by the Muzejní spolek v Telči (Telč Museum Society). In 1963 the collections moved to the Telč château, and the museum became part of the Muzeum Vysočiny (Vysočina Museum) in Jihlava.

During the reconstruction of the château, the museum was housed for four years in the building of the University Centre of Masaryk University. Since April 2023 it has been located in the grounds of the former town hospital in the Staré Město (Old Town) of Telč. The protected heritage building was repaired with support from cross-border European projects; two wings serve the museum and one serves the local museum society.

The collection includes archaeological finds, a Gothic panel with a Madonna, pharmacy cabinets and vessels from the Jesuit college, folk furniture, ceramics, embroidery and the Horácko costume, burgher furniture including a working polyphon (music box), the African ethnographic collection of sculptor F. V. Foit, a moving nativity scene by the Vostrý couple, and wedding banners, of which the branch owns 16 of the 33 surviving examples from Horácko.
