About the museum
The collection of casts of ancient sculpture is one of the important European collections of its kind. It was formed at Charles University in Prague and from the 19th century was exhibited in the Klementinum in Prague. Long-term collecting led to a large selection of the most important works of ancient sculpture, including reconstructions of statues and groups which Wilhelm Klein assembled from fragments held in various museums.
After the installation in the Klementinum was dismantled in the early 1960s, the collection briefly found a home at Hrubý Rohozec Castle near Turnov. In 1965 the university was offered the Franciscan monastery church in Hostinné, whose sober, bright space suited a permanent exhibition of ancient sculpture well. The damaged casts were professionally restored and installed in both aisles of the church, and in August 1969 the gallery was opened to the public for the first time.
The exhibited collection shows the development of ancient sculpture over several centuries. The originals of most of the statues are held in museums around the world, so in Hostinné visitors can see works that they would otherwise have had to seek in many countries. A second part of the collection of casts can be seen at the state castle of Duchcov.
