About the museum

The Emil Filla Gallery has operated in Ústí nad Labem since 1992. It is run by the public benefit company Lidé výtvarnému umění – výtvarné umění lidem (People for Fine Art – Fine Art for the People), which was founded at the end of 1991 and transformed into a public benefit company in 1999. It runs the gallery in cooperation with the Faculty of Art and Design of Jan Evangelista Purkyně University. For decades it was the only exhibition institution in the city devoted to contemporary fine art.

In the new millennium the gallery concentrated mainly on the social aspects of contemporary visual culture and was housed in industrial premises in the Předlice district of Ústí. In 2020 it moved to more intimate premises in the town centre, into a brutalist building in Velká hradební Street with an entrance from Dlouhá Street.

The gallery prepares exhibitions of contemporary Czech and foreign artists, gallery animation programmes for schools and an accompanying programme of courses, workshops and lectures on the history of art. The gallery also has a small shop with catalogues and magazines.
