About the museum
The new castle in Velké Březno was built in 1842–1845 by Count Karel Chotek, the former Supreme Burgrave of the Kingdom of Bohemia, who wanted to spend the autumn of his life here after retiring. The old castle, closer to the Elbe, no longer suited his ideas of comfort, so a simple Empire building was erected which, it is said, looked more like a railway station of the time but offered every modern comfort.
From 1885 to 1910 Karel Maria Chotek, the founder's grandson, rebuilt the castle in the Neo-Renaissance style. He was a passionate traveller, gardener and photographer, a member of the Vienna Camera Club, and a suitcase of his negatives and photographs has survived at the castle to this day. The Velké Březno branch of the family also produced Sophie Chotková, the wife of Archduke Franz Ferdinand d’Este, who died with him in the assassination attempt at Sarajevo on 28 June 1914.
The Chotek family died out in the male line in 1970 with the last owner, Karel Chotek, although the castle had already been confiscated in 1945. Afterwards it served as a children's home, a political school and an army depot. Thanks to the care of the staff, a large part of the original furnishings survived, and after the castle was declared a monument they gradually returned to it. The castle has been open to the public since the 1980s.
Today the tour goes through all the rooms of the first floor and the newly opened children's rooms in the attic, 21 rooms in all, with paintings, photographs and furniture of the Chotek family. Visitors can climb the castle tower for the view and rest in the castle park or the café.
