About the museum
The gallery grew out of the Jenewein Gallery, which the municipal national committee founded in 1950 in the Vlašský dvůr in honour of the painter Felix Jenewein (1857–1905), a native of Kutná Hora. As early as 1910 Kutná Hora teachers had tried to set up a popular gallery, but a more lasting form was achieved only after 1950. In January 2003 it became an independent municipal contributory organisation, which manages the collection, organises exhibitions and supports contemporary fine art.
Since 2017 the gallery has been housed in the Sankturin House on Palackého náměstí, one of the most splendid late Gothic burgher houses in Kutná Hora. The first mention of it dates from 1431; it is named after the mint official Kolomar Sankturin of Nedvojovice, who owned the house until 1540. The house burned down many times and was rebuilt; Gothic cellars and a tower with a rare vault from the end of the 15th century have survived. After structural stabilisation in the 1960s and 1970s, a revitalisation co-financed by the European Union was carried out from October 2020, and after almost three years of reconstruction the house reopened in February 2024.
The gallery's collections consist of almost two hundred works by Felix Jenewein, graphic sheets and a fund of contemporary art from the 1990s onwards. The visit includes an exhibition on alchemy and Renaissance sciences, which uses the original tower with its surviving decoration and technical records of the medieval processing of silver ore. The grounds also include the Dvorní domek (Court House) with an art workshop and a space for lectures, seminars and small events.
