About the museum
The Galerie Středočeského kraje, abbreviated GASK, was founded in 1963 as a regional gallery and became part of the network of state galleries in the Czech Republic. It was officially established a year later as the Středočeská galerie. At first it held exhibitions of leading figures of Czech modern art in various towns of the Central Bohemian Region, for example at the Nelahozeves château, and it also looked after the collection of artworks donated to Lidice.
The gallery changed its name and its seat several times; in 1969–1971 houses in Husova Street in the Old Town of Prague were rebuilt for it, and in 1993 it received the name České muzeum výtvarných umění v Praze (Czech Museum of Fine Arts in Prague). Today it is housed in the extensive building of the former Jesuit college in the historic centre of Kutná Hora, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The collection and exhibition programme focus on visual art of the 20th and 21st centuries. In 2024, to mark 60 years of the gallery, GASK opened a new collection display, Labyrintem; other permanent presentations include the exhibition Entrée and the project GASK pod širým nebem in the gardens behind the gallery. The site also includes visual playrooms and a children’s corner, a café, a library, a shop and the Bistro Skleník.
