About the museum
The Gallery of Modern Art in Roudnice nad Labem opened in 1965 in an adapted palace riding hall. The Baroque building was designed by the architect Antonio Porta in the last quarter of the 17th century. During its conversion, Pavel Mošťák and the gallery's first director, Miloš Saxl, turned it into a flexible exhibition space. The alterations included a new entrance fitted with the stone portal of the original Porta house, which once stood on the square.
The collection was founded by August Švagrovský, a collector from Roudnice, who assembled more than 250 works, mainly of Czech Impressionism, including about sixty paintings by Antonín Slavíček. In 1910 he bequeathed his collection to the town on condition that a public gallery be set up for it. Because of the wars, this only succeeded about half a century later.
Even during the period of normalisation the gallery staged important exhibition projects, for example the international painting symposium Roudnice ’70 and exhibitions of artists whom the regime did not tolerate. Today it is a contributory organization of the Ústí Region and looks after more than three thousand paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures and objects of applied art.
The exhibition follows the story of Czech art from the beginnings of modern painting, through the interwar avant-garde, to experimental work from the second half of the 20th century. The gallery prepares guided tours, lectures, concerts and art workshops for schools and families.
