About the museum
Galerie Smečky is an exhibition and social space in the centre of Prague, which has been run by the company Pražská plynárenská since it was established in 2005. It focuses mainly on collage as an artistic medium, and its regular exhibitions present both its historical and its contemporary form. In its activity so far it has staged dozens of exhibitions by important Czech artists and always offers an accompanying programme.
The gallery manages the corporate collection of Czech collage owned by Pražská plynárenská. The collection has more than 550 works and represents all the important Czech artists, women and men, who devoted themselves to this medium in the twentieth century. The core of the pre-war avant-garde consists of works by Toyen, Jindřich Štyrský and Adolf Hoffmeister; post-war work is represented by, for example, Jiří Kolář, Běla Kolářová, Libor Fára, Květa Pacovská and Karel Trinkewitz. The collection was also helped into being by the exhibition Česká koláž (Czech Collage), which the Graphic Collection of the National Gallery in Prague organised in 1997.
The exhibition programme consists of short-term exhibitions by contemporary artists, which offer new views on collage. The gallery also offers educational programmes for schools and online 3D tours of earlier exhibitions.
