About the museum
The neoclassical and neo-baroque building in Nové Město was built in 1923–1929 for the banker Julius Petschek. From 1939 it was occupied by the Gestapo, which set up its Prague headquarters there. Thousands of patriots were interrogated and tortured there, often before being transferred to prisons or concentration camps.
Shortly after the war a memorial to anti-fascist resistance was created in the basement of the building. The present exhibition dates from 1990 and commemorates the victims of the occupation and the resistance. On the first floor, room no. 102, the former Gestapo torture chamber, has been preserved and is part of the tour.
The building has been a national cultural monument since 1989 and is partly used today by the Ministry of Industry and Trade. The memorial is run by the Český svaz bojovníků za svobodu (ČSBS, Czech Association of Freedom Fighters), which opens it to groups by prior order; admission and guiding are free of charge.
