About the museum

The memorial is on the first floor of the late Baroque Mac Neven Palace in Palackého ulice in Prague 1. It commemorates the historian František Palacký (1798–1876) and the lawyer, politician and encyclopaedist František Ladislav Rieger (1818–1903), and presents the setting in which five generations of the Měchura, Palacký, Rieger and Bráf families lived.

The exhibition in five rooms shows Palacký’s study, Rieger’s study, the social and music salon, the dining room and the bedroom. On display are paintings by Josef Mánes and Julius Mařák, sculptures by J. V. Myslbek and furniture from Classicism to Art Nouveau. A separate room houses the ethnographic objects collected by Palacký’s granddaughter, Libuše Bráfová.

In 1862 Rieger bought the Maleč estate near Chotěboř, where a second memorial to the two men now exists, cared for by their descendants. The Prague memorial is run by the National Museum and is open only for guided tours.
