About the museum
The gallery was founded in 1957 in the premises of the former Vilímek publishing house and bookshop, from the First Republic era, on Národní třída in Prague. It is named after the painter, graphic artist and illustrator Václav Špála. Its greatest flowering came in 1965 to 1970 under the direction of the art theorist Jindřich Chalupecký; the Cena Jindřicha Chalupeckého (Jindřich Chalupecký Prize), the most important award for Czech visual artists under the age of thirty-five, is named after him. In the 1970s and 1980s, when Chalupecký was not permitted to work publicly, the gallery mainly hosted exhibitions of official art.
In the 1990s, under the direction of Jaroslav Krbůšek, the gallery became a progressive exhibition hall focused on contemporary Czech art, and it was here that the Cena Jindřicha Chalupeckého was first awarded. From 2002 the gallery was run by the Nadace Český fond umění, which began leasing it out. In 2007 the municipal district Praha 1 announced a tender for its operation; the agency Semma became the tenant but ended its activity after two years.
In 2010 a new tender was won by a project of PPF Art, which still operates the gallery. Its non-commercial programme is devoted to professional art by contemporary Czech artists, especially various approaches to contemporary painting, but also to photography and sculpture.
