NaFilM – Národní filmové muzeum

Interactive film museum in the Mozarteum, explaining how films are made and presenting their history from the magic lantern to virtual reality.

Opening hoursAdmission 240 Kč

About the museum

The museum was founded by three fellow students who had studied film together at Charles University and decided to set up a film museum in Prague, as there was none. Before the permanent exhibition opened, they organized temporary film exhibitions for several years, made their own exhibits and financed the project, among other things, through public fundraising.

The museum is housed in the Mozarteum building on Jungmannova street; the entrance leads from the Františkánská garden off Jungmannovo náměstí. The museum is supported by the capital city of Prague, the State Cinematography Fund and the Ministry of Culture, and over the long term also by Charles University, which awarded the project the Miloslav Petrusek Prize.

The permanent exhibition is spread over two floors and presents film from Czech and world perspectives. The exhibits were made specifically for the museum; visitors can try projecting film from a strip with a hand crank, adding sound to a film in the sound effects studio, or making their own animated film. The exhibition is complemented by temporary exhibitions and more than two hours of film screenings. The museum also develops programs for schools and international cooperation in film education, for example the ThinkFilM platform.
