About the museum
The Havlíčkův Brod gallery was founded in 1965. It built on the exhibition activity of the Hall of Book Culture of the East Bohemian Publishing House in Havlíčkův Brod and on the art competitions held every year at the national humour and satire festivals in Haškova Lipnice. Gradually it focused on modern Czech book illustration, drawing and printmaking created after 1918.
The gallery is housed in a townhouse called Chmelvodovský, which dates from the 14th century and retains Gothic, Renaissance and Classicist architectural features. The gallery’s collections contain about seven thousand works of art, including prints and illustrations by Cyril Bouda, Adolf Hoffmeister, Emil Filla, Ota Janeček, Kamil Lhoták, Jiří Trnka, Jan Zrzavý and many other artists.
The permanent exhibition includes the Baroque Úhrov Altarpiece with a group sculpture of Calvary by Ignác Rohrbach, created around 1735 for the chapel of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross at the château in Úhrov. During the year thematic and traditional exhibitions take place, for example the series Výstava jedné knihy (One Book Exhibition). After the merger with the Vysočina Museum Havlíčkův Brod, the gallery is part of the joint organisation Galerie a muzeum Vysočiny Havlíčkův Brod.
