About the museum
The idea of founding a fire brigade museum arose in 1975. For this purpose the Přibyslav château was chosen; Zachariáš of Hradec had it founded in 1560 on the site of a former farmyard belonging to the Přibyslav castle. The dilapidated château first had to be repaired; with the help of volunteer and professional firefighters the reconstruction took ten years and cost almost CZK 80 million. Today the château is owned by the Association of Firefighters of Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia.
Since 2006 the museum has held the international certificate Fire Brigade Museum, awarded by CTIF, the international organisation of fire brigade associations from around the world. In the fifteen halls of the Renaissance château, remodelled in the 18th century, a permanent exhibition, History of Fire Protection, covers about 3,000 square metres: the earliest methods of fire-fighting, the emergence and development of fire brigade associations from the mid-19th century, the development of fire brigade uniforms, and examples of historical and contemporary equipment.
Visitors can also walk through the hall of international cooperation of the CTIF countries, with uniforms from various states, or through the regional exhibition Přibyslavsko, called Žižkova síň (Žižka Hall), with archaeological finds, replicas of Hussite weapons, folk costumes and everyday objects.
