About the museum
The idea of founding a museum in Přibyslav emerged at the end of the 19th century. A strong stimulus was the Ethnographic Exhibition in Prague in 1895. A year earlier the school headmaster Emanuel Činčera, together with the teachers Alois Vlček and Václav Vyšata, had organised an ethnographic exhibition directly in the town. They managed to gather about 1,200 objects, for example folk costumes, work tools, weapons, ceramics, coins and old books. Some of them went to Prague, where the sixty most valuable remained.
The real museum came into being only in 1920, when the Muzejní spolek Přibyslav (Přibyslav Museum Society) was founded and the museum obtained premises in the Přibyslav chateau. It was based there until 1975, when the whole building was handed over to the Federal Ministry of the Interior and became home to a centre of the fire-brigade movement with a fire-brigade museum. The town museum thus lost its roof over its head for many years.
In summer 1998 the renovated building of the Starý špitál (Old Hospital) on Vyšehrad was opened, and the museum began to move there. Since 2005 it has been housed in the Kurfürst House on the square together with the information centre, where a new exhibition was being set up. The house belonged to the old medieval development of the town, is first mentioned in 1654, and has housed the town library since 1996.
