About the museum

The French palaeontologist Joachim Barrande (1799–1883) made the area around Skryje and Týřovice famous through his discovery and description of Palaeozoic fauna, especially trilobites. After his death other professionals and amateurs also researched the area, and the first public exhibition of Palaeozoic fauna was set up in the local hotel. The collection then moved to a school and to the building of a former small savings bank (kampelička), and from 1986 it was part of the then District Museum in Rakovník.

The memorial has been housed since 1997 in the former school building no. 68 and is a branch of the Muzeum T. G. M. Rakovník. The main part of the exhibition in the attic presents palaeontological finds from the surroundings of Skryje and Týřovice, as well as measuring instruments from the estate of Joachim Barrande. The celebrated exhibit is the trilobite Sao hirsuta, which made Skryje famous around the world.

On the ground floor is the ethnographic exhibition Život ve Skryjích (Life in Skryje), with a display of a rural kitchen from the first half of the 20th century and photographs of the region's folk architecture. Next to the ticket office is an exhibition on Týřov Castle, created in cooperation with the archaeological heritage authorities, with finds from archaeological excavations. In the basement of the former jail (šatlava) there is an improvised palaeontological site where visitors can try to find their own trilobite.
