About the museum

The Photography Cabinet was founded in 2019 at Kladenský zámek. It loosely continues the tradition of the Malá galerie České spořitelny (Small Gallery of the Czech Savings Bank), which was run for many decades by Jiří Hanke and which from the 1980s presented the work of significant Czech photographers in Kladno. When that gallery closed in 2019 after almost 42 years, the town offered Hanke premises in the chateau. Under his curatorial supervision, the Cabinet holds regular exhibitions of regional and nationally significant creators who draw attention to social topics or express their feelings through photography.

Kladenský zámek grew up on the site of a medieval fortified manor, which was rebuilt in 1737–1740 to designs by Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer for the Benedictines of Břevnov. It became the residence of the abbot and the administrative centre of the Kladno estate. Little of the original decoration has survived, mainly the Chapel of St Lawrence. In 1933 the town bought the chateau and set up a library, an archive and a museum in it.

Today the municipal Gallery of Kladenský zámek, which has held fine art exhibitions since 1996, is on the first floor. The chateau also houses the permanent exhibition Kladenští mistři (Masters of Kladno), an exhibition on Zdeněk Miler and his Krtek, and an exhibition of puppets by Zdeněk Podhůrský.
