About the museum

The Lidická galerie is located in new Lidice, a few minutes' walk from the memorial site. The building was erected in the 1960s as a cultural house to a design by the architect Richard Podzemný. After 1989 it passed into private hands; later the state bought it and in 2002–2003 rebuilt it for the gallery's needs.

The basis of the exhibition is the Lidice Art Collection (Lidická sbírka umění). It was created in the 1960s as a museum-type solidarity collection on the initiative of the British doctor and Member of Parliament Sir Barnett Stross, and consists exclusively of gifts from artists from around the world. It is the most important international public collection of contemporary art in the Czech Republic. Since 2023 the permanent exhibition on the ground floor has been supplemented by short-term exhibitions.

On the first floor is the Children's Gallery with a programme for the youngest visitors. From May to January the International Children's Art Exhibition Lidice (Mezinárodní dětská výtvarná výstava Lidice) takes place there. The gallery garden is used for cultural events, and some sculptures from the collection are displayed there all year round.
