About the museum
The museum continues the tradition of the Muzeum Morkovského kraje (Morkovice Regional Museum), which was founded in Morkovice in 1936 on the initiative of the teacher and chronicler Josef Přikryl. The collections were first housed in the agricultural school, after the war in the chateau, and in 1963, when the museum was closed, they were mostly taken to Kroměříž.
The town of Morkovice-Slížany returned to this tradition: in 2008 it bought one of the oldest surviving houses in the town, which stands opposite the place where the first museum began. After a reconstruction costing CZK 1.1 million, carried out from March to June 2010, the museum reopened on 12 June 2010, after 47 years. This time it is devoted only to basketry and related crafts and pays tribute to the local basketry masters.
The exhibition presents the basketry art of mainly local craftsmen, guild relics and tools. The exhibits were lent by the Muzeum Kroměřížska (Kroměříž Museum), by residents of Morkovice-Slížany and by people from elsewhere. Every year another exhibition is added that recalls the town's anniversaries and runs until the end of the season.
