About the museum
The exhibition at the Vyškov airfield was built by the Nadace Letecké historické společnosti (Foundation of the Aviation Historical Society) in cooperation with the Army of the Czech Republic. From the start, the foundation's members wanted to show the public what they were working on. The exhibition therefore initially included only the Mi-4 helicopter, the MiG-15 fighter, two MiG-21 aircraft and the Il-14 transport aircraft, inside which an exhibition of wreckage from aircraft shot down during the Second World War was set up.
Today the museum spreads over several hectares of the former military airfield on the north-eastern edge of Vyškov, in the direction of Prostějov, and it is one of the largest exhibitions of its kind in the Czech Republic. The exhibits come from various military units, and some of the types on display are still in use. Visitors can see fighter, bomber, transport and reconnaissance aircraft, helicopters, aircraft engines including training cutaways of jet engines, military vehicles, and artillery and anti-aircraft equipment.
The oldest exhibits are the wrecks and parts of aircraft that crashed or were shot down during the Second World War and were excavated mainly in Moravia, for example the Messerschmitt Bf 109, Focke-Wulf Fw 190, Wellington, and Ilyushin Il-2 and Il-10. The foundation's members work for the museum in their free time and without fees. The museum is open to the public seasonally, from April to October.
