About the museum
The windmill in Velké Těšany is a wooden structure of the German type, whose entire body can be turned around its axis into the wind. It has been a national cultural monument since 2014. It has three levels: the undermill with the supporting structure, the milling room, where the flour fell, and the sack hoist, where sacks of grain were hauled up.
The plot for the building was bought in 1830 by Josef Bartoň, but he died a year later and the mill often changed owners. In 1889 Jan Páter bought it for his son Josef. After a storm in 1890 destroyed the structure, Josef rebuilt it and doubled the supporting beams. During the Protectorate, miller František Páter ground grain even at night despite the ban, until the Gestapo arrested him in 1942.
In 1946 there were plans to break up the mill for firewood, and in the 1960s it was threatened with collapse. The culture department of the district national committee (ONV) in Kroměříž bought it from Anežka Páterová. A comprehensive reconstruction began in 1972, after which the mill was taken over by the Kroměříž Museum; it has been open to the public since 1979.
