About the museum
The Flower Garden in Kroměříž is one of the most significant examples of Baroque garden art in Central Europe. Together with the Castle Garden and the Archbishop's Chateau it is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The garden was created for the bishops of Olomouc, and its dominant feature is the octagonal Rotunda, built in 1666–1668 to a design by Giovanni Pietro Tencalla.
The Rotunda stands in the middle of the original flower garden and is open on all sides. Inside is a central hall with four grottoes and four small stucco rooms. From 1669 it was decorated by the workshop of Carpoforo Tencalla; the statues of fauns and seasons were made by Michael Mandík, and the stuccowork by a group led by Quirico Castelli. The floor is a pebble mosaic, and water is the central theme. At the beginning of the 20th century Archbishop Theodor Kohn had six of the eight entrances walled up, added an outer portico and removed the water features; the original paintings were then repainted.
Today the garden is managed by the National Heritage Institute. Visitors can walk through the garden at their own pace, join a guided tour, or choose a route linking the garden with the Archbishop's Chateau. The garden has a palm house; animals are not allowed here.
