About the museum

Metoděj Vlach, a fitter and racing driver for Laurin & Klement, became in 1912 the first Czech to take off in Mladá Boleslav in an aircraft of his own design powered by a car engine. In his memory the Nadační fond Metoděje Vlacha (Metoděj Vlach Foundation) was established in 2001; it owns and operates his replica and other flight-capable replicas and reproductions of historic aircraft.

The museum building on the northern edge of the Mladá Boleslav airfield was completed in 2014 to a design by the studio Hlaváček – architekti and received the title Building of the Year 2014. It opened to the public on 12 April 2015. The project was led by the Central Bohemian Region, and the museum is a branch of the Muzeum Mladoboleslavska (Mladá Boleslav Museum).

The hangar halls are used for exhibitions, flight simulators and interactive elements. From the grandstand visitors can watch activity on the airfield apron, and from the observation tower there is a view over the surrounding countryside. The aim of the museum is to bring the history of aviation closer to visitors and to show in practice how aircraft used to fly.
