About the museum

The beginnings of the Mladá Boleslav castle go back roughly to the second half of the 10th century. The foundations of today's form were laid at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries, and in the 16th century the castle was rebuilt as a representative Renaissance seat. This form was destroyed by the Thirty Years' War and, above all, by the conversion into barracks in the second half of the 18th century.

The army used the castle until 1953. A tragic chapter was the years of the Nazi occupation, when an internment camp for Jews from Mladá Boleslav and the surrounding area operated in the castle. After the army left, the castle was used as a textile warehouse, and only in 1973 was it reconstructed and put to use as the seat of the museum.

Today the Muzeum Mladoboleslavska is housed here; it also runs branches in Bělá pod Bezdězem, Benátky nad Jizerou, Dolní Krupá and the Letecké muzeum Metoděje Vlacha. In the castle there are modern exhibitions on the history of the castle and on the changes in rural life in the Mladá Boleslav region, and an exhibition of Baroque sculptures from the workshop of the Jelínek family. On the second floor there is a museum playroom for children.
