About the museum

The foundation of today's collection was laid in the second half of the 1960s, when motorcycles and passenger cars by Laurin & Klement were displayed in the Mladá Boleslav congregation of the Czech Brethren, together with a fire engine and a racing car. In 1975, during the celebrations of the town's millennium and the 80th anniversary of the carmaker, the Autosalon Škoda – Technické muzeum AZNP opened in a separate building. At that time, around twenty thousand visitors came to the exhibition each year.

In September 1995, on the centenary of the company's founding by Václav Laurin and Václav Klement, the museum moved into the oldest part of the factory on Václava Klementa Avenue. The historic buildings from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, where cars were manufactured until 1928, were adapted for museum purposes; they also include a restoration workshop and the company archive.

The permanent exhibition covers more than 1,800 m² and is built around three themes: Tradition, Evolution and Precision. It is multimedia and interactive and combines vehicles, films, documents and the stories of contemporary people. The collection comprises roughly 360 items, mainly series-production passenger cars, racing specials and prototypes, several dozen engines, four motorcycles and one bicycle. The oldest exhibit is the Slavia bicycle from 1899; the collection also includes the first automobile, a Voiturette, and the Ferat film car. The museum also has the Laurin & Klement Forum hall and the Café Restaurant Václav, and after a prior reservation a visit can be supplemented with a tour of the Škoda Auto production plant.
