About the museum
The predecessor of the Bělá château was a fortified manor (tvrz) from the early 14th century, which was destroyed during the Hussite Wars. On its foundations a Renaissance château was built in the second half of the 16th century. Construction continued into the early 17th century and produced an exceptional seigniorial residence with storeyed arcades decorated with frescoes. The château received its present form in a rebuilding in 1689–1691.
The château never became a permanent seat of the lords; manorial officials were based there, and at the end of the 18th century a textile manufactory was set up here. In 1855 a forestry school moved into the château and stayed until the early 20th century, when the premises were converted into flats. Since 1939 the château has housed the museum, and the whole complex is being gradually reconstructed.
Today the Muzeum Podbezdězí is a branch of the Muzeum Mladoboleslavska. The permanent exhibition presents the Podbezdězí region and its nature; an original Gothic pietà from around 1400 from the Bělá church is also on display. The exhibition rooms themselves are decorated with Renaissance painted panelled ceilings in several halls.
