About the museum

The summer pavilion in Ostrov was built in 1673–1679 by the Prague architect Abraham Leuthner for the Dukes of Saxe-Lauenburg, who had owned the Ostrov estate since 1625. It stood in the centre of the famous Mannerist castle garden of about 12 hectares, which disappeared in the second half of the 18th century after floods and a lack of care. The present form of the park can be dated to the beginning of the 19th century. The pavilion served as a summer residence for the owners; in its tower there was an alchemical laboratory of the last Saxe-Lauenburg lord.

The interiors were decorated in the 1690s by Italian painters and stucco workers; the frescoes on the ceiling and walls of the hall, with cosmological symbols and allegories, are among the most valuable parts of the monument. In the 19th century the Grand Dukes of Tuscany leased it as a summer restaurant, and later it served, for example, as the club of the Jáchymov Mines.

The Karlovy Vary Gallery of Art has had a branch in the pavilion since 1967. After reconstruction in 1972–1982, exhibitions are held there alongside the historical interiors, and a permanent exhibition of porcelain is available on the second floor. The building is part of a large Baroque complex with the Ostrov château, the princes’ palace and the former Piarist monastery.
