About the museum

The Astoria show mine is part of the visitor information centre in the basement of the Astoria spa hotel in the Jáchymov spa. The centre is certified and, besides information about the spa and its surroundings, it also raises awareness of radon and its use in treatment.

The mine is a faithful copy of the underground galleries of the Svornost mine. Visitors can see timbering and props, boreholes and rock falls, mining equipment, shaft hoists, uranium veins and pipes carrying radon water. Visitors enter wearing a protective helmet, and the youngest children can try crawling through one section – the position in which miners extracted silver in the 16th century.

A one-hour visit consists of a guided tour and the film Magické místo Jáchymov. The exhibition also includes an educational room on radon and a photo corner with a golden bath, showing how a radon bath works. The mine also houses the exhibition Jáchymovské peklo, devoted to political prisoners from the labour camps in the Jáchymov area.
