About the museum
Jáchymov is one of the most important Czech mining towns. In the 16th century, silver mining and the minting of silver thalers made it famous; the name “dollar” is derived from them. Later lead, arsenic, cobalt, nickel and tin were mined here, as well as pitchblende, in which the Curies discovered polonium and radium in 1898.
From the late 1940s uranium was mined in the Jáchymov area for the Soviet arms programme, and political prisoners also worked in the mines. Adit No. 1 was driven during extensive exploration work in 1952–1953 in the grounds of the neighbouring Svornost mine. It is about 230 metres long, and one of its side galleries crosses the formerly mined silver-bearing Evangelist vein.
The adit was opened to the public in 2006–2008. In 2012 it was also possible to clear and secure older mine workings from the silver rush at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. Inside is a small exhibition of mining equipment, such as mine carts and drills. It is run by the Sokolov Museum.
