About the museum

The Loreto Chapel in Rumburk was founded on the initiative of the estate owner Anton Florian of Liechtenstein, who had visited the famous pilgrimage site at Loreto in Italy. For the Rumburk building he had the Italian Holy House measured, and the architect Johann Lucas Hildebrandt drew up the plans. The foundation stone was laid in 1704 and the chapel was consecrated in 1707. Its outer shell is decorated with extensive sculptural work by Franz Biener, completed in 1709, which is among the most valuable of all Czech Lorettos. The venerated statue is the Black Madonna of Loreto, which was blessed in Rome by Pope Innocent XII and reached Rumburk in 1703.

In 1743–1749 the complex was surrounded by arcades, which include the Chapel of the Holy Stairs, the youngest of its kind in the Czech lands. The Loreto directly adjoins the monastery church of St Lawrence, which belonged to the Capuchin convent in Rumburk. The Capuchins served here from 1683 to 1950; afterwards the complex was taken over by the Roman Catholic parish.

Until the Second World War the Loreto was an important Marian pilgrimage site of northern Bohemia and Upper Lusatia. Today the parish manages it and offers visitors a tour of the Loreto Chapel, the cloister, the Chapel of the Holy Stairs and the church. Since the reconstruction of 2012–2013 this also includes permanent exhibitions in the entrance building and in the arcade. Since October 2023 the guided service has been provided by the Regional Museum in Děčín.
