About the museum

The collection was founded by the Humboldtverein, which had already been established in Seifhennersdorf in 1870. From 1930 the local history museum was housed in the former weaving school; in 1943 it had to make way for a military hospital and was able to reopen on June 5, 1948. As the school later needed more space itself, the museum rooms kept shrinking.

The municipality then chose the former farmhouse of a four-sided farm on Nordstraße, which came into its possession in 1968. After extensive conversion, the town museum opened there in 1977. To give the house its own profile after the Wende (reunification), the town council renamed it on November 8, 1996, "Karasek-Museum – ein Heimatmuseum der besonderen Art". In 2020, fire protection and electrics were renewed; since then the tourist information has also been located in the house.

Today the museum tells of the life of the highwayman captain Karasek and of smugglers and poachers in the border region. Further themes include the Bohemian enclave of Niederleutersdorf (1635–1849), the hard life of the linen weavers, a farmhouse, sleeping and weaving room around 1800 furnished as it originally was, and the Umgebindehaus itself. A groin-vaulted room documents the Polierschiefer deposit with its fossils up to 32 million years old, and a separate display shows everyday life in the GDR.
